LABOUR THAT LASTS

There is a deep human longing for our work to matter, for our efforts to have meaning beyond the immediate task. We pour so much of our time, energy, and heart into our daily labour, and the fear that it might all be pointless can be profoundly discouraging. The apostle Paul, at the culmination of his great chapter on the resurrection, offers one of the most powerful assurances in all of scripture. He provides a bedrock truth upon which we can build a life of purpose: your labour in the Lord is not in vain. It is not futile, it is not wasted, it is not forgotten.

This promise invites us to reconsider what constitutes “the work of the Lord.” It is far more than what happens within the walls of a church. It is any and every task you undertake with a heart oriented towards God. When you approach your job with integrity, when you parent with patience, when you create with excellence, when you serve with kindness, you are engaging in the work of the Lord. It is about the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ behind what you do. By infusing your daily activities with the character of Christ, you transform them from temporary obligations into acts of eternal significance.

Paul’s exhortation to “stand firm” and “let nothing move you” acknowledges that this path is not always easy. You will face days of weariness, moments of frustration, and seasons where your efforts seem to go unnoticed. Discouragement will try to shift you from your foundation of faith. But our perseverance is not based on our feelings or results; it is anchored in the reality of Christ’s victory over death. Because He is risen, our hope is secure and our work has ultimate meaning. This truth empowers us to remain steadfast, even when the work is hard and the fruit is not yet visible.

Knowing that your labour is never in vain should inspire you to “always give yourselves fully” to it. This is a call to wholehearted engagement, a rejection of apathy and mediocrity. Do not hold back, offering only a fraction of your effort. Whatever God has put in front of you to do today, whether it feels significant or mundane, do it with all your heart as an act of worship. This is the key to a fruitful life that echoes into eternity. Your faithful, daily labour, offered to God, is building something that will truly last.
