FAITHFUL IN THE PLACE YOU ARE PLANTED

The instruction from the prophet Jeremiah came to a people displaced, living in exile in a land they did not choose. Their natural inclination would have been to withdraw, to simply endure until they could go home. Yet God’s command was the very opposite: He told them to invest, to build, to plant, and to seek the good of the very city that held them captive. You may find yourself in a season, a job, or a neighbourhood that feels like an exile, a place far from where you had hoped to be. God’s word to you today is the same. He has planted you there for a purpose.

To “seek the peace and prosperity” of your city is a radical, others-focused command. It means moving beyond your own comfort and concerns and actively contributing to the well-being of your environment. This is not a passive waiting but an active sowing. It involves praying for your leaders, your colleagues, and your neighbours. It means looking for practical ways to be a source of blessing, integrity, and grace in your workplace and community. This posture changes everything. Instead of seeing your current circumstances as a waiting room, you begin to see them as a field ripe for planting seeds of God's kingdom.

The divine principle attached to this command is deeply encouraging: “because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Your own spiritual growth and personal fruitfulness are directly connected to your willingness to bless the place you are in. When you invest in the lives of those around you, when you contribute to a healthier work culture or a more connected neighbourhood, you create an environment where you yourself can flourish. God has designed us to thrive not in isolation, but in community. Your blessing of others boomerangs, returning to you in ways you may not expect.

Resist the temptation to postpone your purpose, believing you will start serving God when your circumstances improve. Your calling is not on hold. God wants to produce a harvest through you right where you are, with the people you are with today. Ask Him to give you His heart for your ‘city’, whether that is an office, a street, or a school. Pray for its peace, work for its good, and watch how God uses your faithfulness to bring forth fruit, both in the lives of others and in your own soul. Your current address is your mission field.
